Every product Bio Sculpture develops is the result of careful formulation, independent testing and a genuine commitment to getting the balance right - between performance, durability and the long-term health of your clients' nails and skin. That includes how we approach ingredients like IBOA.
What is IBOA?
IBOA (isobornyl acrylate) is a monomer found in virtually all professional UV and LED-cured gel products - it's what helps deliver the adhesion and durability that makes gel manicures last. Like many acrylate monomers used across professional nail work, dentistry and other medical fields, it carries a sensitisation potential when exposure isn't managed properly.
The key word is exposure. Properly formulated products, applied and cured correctly, significantly reduce the risk of skin contact with uncured ingredients - which is where sensitisation risk actually comes from.
Why does it get talked about?
With repeated or improper exposure, some people can develop a reaction to IBOA over time. This isn't unique to IBOA - it's a characteristic shared by a number of acrylate monomers, which is why correct application and curing technique matters so much regardless of the products you're using.
Recognising a reaction
Symptoms can look similar to other contact allergies and may include:
- Redness, itching or a burning sensation around the nails or fingers
- Swelling or blistering of the surrounding skin
- Persistent irritation that doesn't settle between appointments
- In more severe cases, reactions spreading beyond the fingertips
