Nail Allergies: What Every Nail Technician Needs to Know

Nail Allergies and Prevention

Nail allergies are one of the most challenging, and most misunderstood, issues in our industry. They can appear out of nowhere, affect clients who have had treatments for years, and leave both technicians and clients confused about what went wrong or where to turn next.

The good news is that with the right knowledge, products and support, allergic reactions don’t have to be a dead end. They can be understood, managed and, in many cases, prevented.

How to Recognise an Allergic Reaction

Symptoms of a nail allergy can vary from mild to severe and may appear anywhere from a few hours to several days after a treatment. Common signs include:

  • Redness, itching, or swelling around the nails or fingertips
  • Burning or a sensation of heat near the nail area
  • Blistering, peeling, or cracking of the surrounding skin
  • Soreness that persists well after the appointment
  • Nail lifting or separation from the nail bed in more severe cases

In some cases, reactions can spread beyond the fingertips - to the face, eyelids or neck, if the client has touched those areas with uncured product on their hands.

Prevention Is Always Better Than Cure

Here are the habits that make the biggest difference:

Bio Sculpture Anthea Colour Gel Hands

1. Nail Your Application

Skin contact with uncured product is one of the biggest risk factors. When gel touches the skin and is cured in that position, the skin is exposed to active ingredients and repeated occurrences build sensitisation over time. Product should never flood the cuticle, sidewalls or surrounding skin, and even when wiping a brush or tool, uncured product can transfer without you realising. Use a stainless steel orange stick throughout the treatment to keep product off the skin.

2. Cure Correctly, Every Single Time

Under-curing is one of the most common and overlooked contributors to nail allergies. Uncured product remains chemically active on the nail, continuing to expose the skin long after your client has left the salon. To cure properly:

  • Always use the correct lamp recommended for your system.
  • Check your lamp regularly to make sure every bulb is working. A single faulty bulb reduces curing efficiency significantly.
  • Replace your lamp every two years.
  • Instruct clients on correct hand placement in the lamp before curing begins - fingers should be flat, spread and positioned correctly.
  • We all have that one client whose thumbs naturally face downward in the lamp, this can prevent the gel from curing properly. By curing the thumbs separately, it's much easier for the client to keep them flat and ensure an even, thorough cure every time.
  • Make sure clients know not to remove their hand from the lamp during curing.
  • Always ensure your application is thin and even. A thick application can create a pocket of uncured gel beneath the surface, it may look fully cured on the outside, but inside there can be a layer of gel that the lamp hasn't reached. This uncured gel can then leach onto the skin and nails, and over time this can cause allergic reactions.

3. Remove Product Regularly to Check the Nail Plate

This gives you the chance to spot early signs of damage, lifting or sensitivity before they develop into something more serious. If you're infilling, avoid doing more than one infill before carrying out a full removal and nail plate check.

4. Product Formulation Matters

Not all gel formulas are created equal; the ingredients used make all the difference. At Bio Sculpture, we use only the highest quality ingredients, ensuring our products cure thoroughly and leave no free monomers on the nail, which can be a leading cause of allergic reactions.

What sets us apart is that we manufacture every single product ourselves, in our own factory in South Africa. This means we have complete control over what goes into every bottle, absolutely no compromises and no shortcuts.

Managing New & Existing Clients

If the client has experienced an allergic reaction elsewhere

Always ask whether they've had allergy testing and take time to check your SDS sheets. Rather than applying everything at once, introduce one product at a time during each appointment - base coat first, then builder once you're happy all is well, followed by colour and top coat. It's a small adjustment that makes a big difference and shows your client they're in safe hands. Remember we are always at the end of the phone and here to help you. We know a nail allergy can be daunting and we are here with you every step of the way.

As a technician

It's easy to focus on your client's safety and overlook your own - but repeated daily exposure to these ingredients over a career can take its toll. Getting into the habit of wearing gloves during every treatment is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself.

How Bio Sculpture Supports You When Reactions Happen

For over seven years, we’ve kept detailed records of every reported allergy - logging each reaction, client history, the products used, lamps used and relevant batch codes.

Once an allergy is reported, we don't just log it and move on. We work directly with you - the technician - and your client to understand what happened and what comes next. That means coaching both of you through a structured recovery process: how to bring the nails and skin back to optimal health, what to avoid during that period and what a safe, appropriate treatment plan looks like going forward.

Seven years of this kind of tracking means we've built a depth of knowledge about how nail allergies present, progress and resolve that is unmatched in the professional nail industry. That knowledge informs how we formulate, how we educate, how we support the professionals who trust us and has enabled us to achieve an allergy rate of just 0.014%. This means 14 in 100,000 will have a reaction to Bio Sculpture.

You're Not Alone in This

Nail allergies can feel isolating - for your client, who may be grieving the treatments they love, and for you, as the professional trying to help them navigate something complex and emotionally charged.

But you don't have to figure it out alone. Bio Sculpture has been supporting nail professionals through exactly these situations for years, with a genuine commitment to getting the best outcome for everyone involved.

If you've had a client report a reaction, or if you have questions about ingredients, formulation, or how to protect yourself and your clients going forward, please reach out to us.
